Saint Maximilian Mary Kolbe
Saint Maximilian Mary Kolbe was a Polish Conventual Franciscan priest, founder of the Militia of the Immaculata, missionary and pioneer of Catholic mass communications, and martyr of charity who gave his life for another prisoner at Auschwitz.
Rajmund Kolbe was born on 8 January 1894 in Zduńska Wola, a textile town in the Polish lands then governed by the Russian Empire. His parents, Juliusz Kolbe and Marianna Dąbrowska, were working weavers who later settled in Pabianice. Their household joined demanding work, Polish patriotism, Catholic practice, and particular love for the Mother of God. Political borders divided Poland during Rajmund's childhood, but the family's faith and national identity were not erased by those borders.
He was intelligent, energetic, technically curious, and sometimes mischievous. According to testimony preserved by his mother, after she once asked what would become of him, Rajmund prayed before an image of the Blessed Virgin and reported seeing her offer two crowns: a white crown signifying purity and a red crown signifying martyrdom. He accepted both. The Church does not require belief in this private childhood experience, but the account became a truthful spiritual image of the chastity and sacrificial charity that marked his mature vocation.
