Liturgical Year
The Liturgical Year is the Church's ordered annual celebration of the whole mystery of Jesus Christ, centered on Sunday and Easter and extending through seasons, solemnities, feasts, memorials, fasts, and the sanctoral cycle.
The Liturgical Year is not a pageant that pretends the events of salvation happen again. Through sacramental memorial the Church enters the one Paschal Mystery and receives its grace as Christ's mysteries are celebrated in ordered time. Incarnation, manifestation, ministry, Passion, Resurrection, Ascension, Pentecost, and the promised return are contemplated as one economy rather than disconnected anniversaries.
Calendar dates serve worship; they do not control it by civil convention alone. Movable celebrations, vigils, octaves, seasons, proper calendars, rank, and transfer rules determine the actual liturgical day. A devotional anniversary or popular saint may belong to a date without becoming the principal celebration, and civil holidays have no liturgical rank unless competent ecclesiastical authority assigns one.
