Canon (Cleric) is a cleric who belongs to a cathedral or collegiate chapter and fulfills its common liturgical and institutional duties.[1]
Nature of the office
The title is an ecclesiastical office or dignity, not a degree of Holy Orders and not a reference to the canon of Scripture or canon law. A canon may hold another pastoral office, but chapter membership has its own statutes and obligations.
Canonical place
The diocesan bishop confers canonries after hearing the chapter, without prejudice to reserved rights. Statutes regulate insignia, remuneration, attendance, and the offices held within the chapter.
