Communion with the Bishop of Rome is the visible participation of faithful, bishops, and particular Churches in the universal unity served by the successor of Saint Peter, an internal constitutive principle of Catholic ecclesial fullness.

Primatial communion

The Roman Pontiff is bishop of the particular Church of Rome and, as Peter's successor, the perpetual visible source and foundation of unity among bishops and faithful. Communion with him joins a bishop to the one episcopal college and a particular Church to the full visible communion of the universal Church.

Interior, not diplomatic

The primacy is not a foreign power added from outside after a local Church is complete. Communionis notio teaches that the Petrine ministry belongs from within to the essence of each particular Church. The universal and particular dimensions of the Church mutually penetrate one another.

Bishop and episcopal college

Episcopal consecration gives the fullness of Orders, but the episcopal offices can be exercised only in hierarchical communion with the head and members of the college. Valid ordination, lawful canonical mission, and communion with the college must therefore be distinguished without tearing them apart.[1]

Separated particular Churches

Eastern Churches outside Catholic communion retain bishops and Eucharist and are true particular Churches, but they lack the full constitutive relation to the successor of Peter. Catholic doctrine neither denies their churchly reality nor treats Roman communion as an optional enrichment with no bearing on their condition.[2][3]

The lack of communion does not authorize Catholics to pronounce on the culpability of every Eastern Christian. It is an objective corporate wound inherited through history. Ecumenical dialogue seeks restoration of communion in truth, with legitimate liturgical and disciplinary diversity preserved.[4]

Limits of shorthand

Roman communion must not be reduced to obedience to every papal opinion, political preference, or administrative choice. Its doctrinal content concerns the office instituted for universal faith and unity; its canonical expression follows the law of the Church. Respectful disagreement over prudential matters does not itself constitute schism.
