Our Lady of the Good Event of Parañaque (Spanish: Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso de Parañaque; Filipino: Ina ng Mabuting Pangyayari ng Parañaque; Filipino: Mabunying Reyna ng Palanyag) is a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child enshrined at the Cathedral Parish of St. Andrew in Parañaque, Philippines.
The original Spanish title is often incorrectly translated in English as Our Lady of Good Success due to the similarity between the Spanish word "suceso" (meaning "event" or "occurrence") and the English word "success."
History
The history of Our Lady of the Good Event of Parañaque is based on the writings of Nicolás de San Pedro, the vicar of St. Andrew's Parish (now the Cathedral Parish of St. Andrew), written in 1700.
The Augustinian fathers brought the image from Spain in 1580 as a gift from the King to the Filipino converts. The Augustinians established St. Andrew's Parish in Palanyag (now Parañaque) that same year.
The image was left untouched and covered with dust until Catig, a poor native from Don Galo, discovered it and asked the sacristan if he could bring the statue to his home. The sacristan agreed, and Catig enshrined the image in his house, where he lit candles in its honor.
As Catig lay dying, his neighbors called the priest Juan de Guevarra to administer the Last Rites. Upon blessing Catig, de Guevarra saw the statue near his bed and asked if he could acquire it for PHP 24. Catig initially refused but later agreed, knowing that the image would be venerated by many people.
According to de Guevarra, the image emitted a mysterious light and hymns were heard, leading him to report the event to the Augustinian Superior Alonso de Mentrida.
Enthronement
Upon hearing de Guevarra's testimony, Mentrida ordered that the image be transferred to St. Andrew's Church. On August 10, 1625, a solemn procession was held, and the image was enthroned at the altar.
To determine the title of the Blessed Mother, the friars wrote various Marian titles on pieces of paper and placed them in an urn. A child was asked to draw a title, and after six consecutive selections of "Buen Suceso," the image was given the title Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso.
Pontifical Coronation
Pope John Paul II granted the image a decree of Canonical Coronation on December 18, 1999. The solemn rite of coronation was celebrated on September 8, 2000.
Our Lady of the Good Event of Parañaque is recognized as the Patroness of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Parañaque together with Andrew the Apostle, the titular patron of the cathedral.
Diocesan Shrine and Patroness of Parañaque
On August 10, 2012, during her 387th enthronement anniversary celebration, the Cathedral Parish of St. Andrew was declared the Diocesan Shrine of Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso de Palanyag through a decree approved by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Parañaque.
On September 8, 2012, the Diocese of Parañaque officially declared Our Lady of the Good Event of Parañaque as the Patroness of the City of Parañaque.
Feast Day
The Feast of Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso is celebrated every August 10 at the Cathedral Parish of St. Andrew, commemorating the solemn enthronement of the image in 1625.
The people of Parañaque affectionately call her Nana Ciso, a title expressing their devotion and love for their beloved Patroness.
Buen Suceso Jubilee
Starting on August 10, 2025, the Buen Suceso Jubilee officially began after receiving approval from the Holy See. The Jubilee Door was solemnly opened on the same day by the Bishop Emeritus of Novaliches, Bishop Teodoro C. Bacani Jr., marking the beginning of the Buen Suceso Jubilee celebration.
In January 2026, the Buen Suceso Jubilee Activities commenced as part of the celebration, with each month highlighting a special theme: January as Biyaya ng Kabataan, February as Biyaya ng Pamilya at Nakatatanda, March as Biyaya ng Awa, April as Biyaya ng Buhay, May as Biyaya ng Kamanggawa at Lingkod Bayan, June as Biyaya ng Pagtanggap, July as Biyaya ng Kalusugan, and August to September as Biyaya ng Sama-samang Pagdiriwang.
