Positio Super Vita, Virtutibus et Fama Sanctitatis

GuidePreparation and examination of the positio follow binding cause procedure, while its evidence is historical and its assessment of heroic virtue and holiness is theological.

Positio Super Vita, Virtutibus et Fama Sanctitatis is the critically prepared Roman dossier presenting the evidence and argument concerning a Servant of God’s life, heroic virtues, and reputation for holiness for examination by the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.[1]

From diocesan acts to a critical Roman presentation

After the diocesan or eparchial inquiry reaches Rome and its juridical validity is recognized, a relator guides preparation of the Positio Super Vita, Virtutibus et Fama Sanctitatis with an external collaborator. Divinus perfectionis Magister requires the work to follow critical hagiographical method. It must expose the proof in the acts, not create a devotional biography detached from contrary documents or difficult testimony.[2]

The full title identifies three connected objects: the candidate’s life supplies historical context; virtues are examined in the heroic degree required for the cause; and Fama Sanctitatis concerns a genuine, spontaneous, stable, and widespread ecclesial reputation. A beautiful narrative about life cannot replace proof of individual virtues, while evidence of admiration cannot be treated as the Dicastery’s judgment that heroicity is established.

Documentation and critical method

Testimony, writings, archival discoveries, expert reports, and procedural acts are organized with accurate references and discussion of objections. Historical causes may require prior examination by historical consultors. The positio’s selectivity must remain traceable to the public copy and acts so that a consultor can test quotations, chronology, witness quality, omissions, and the source of each asserted fact.

Informatio, summary, and supporting material

Traditional components can include a reasoned informatio and a summarium of proof, with formats governed by the Dicastery’s rules and the needs of the cause. These component names should not be mistaken for separate judgments. Their purpose is to make a large evidentiary record examinable while retaining the distinction between advocacy, historical demonstration, and the consultors’ independent vote.

Theological and cardinalatial examination

The completed positio proceeds to theological consultors, ordinarily in a Special Congress of Theological Consultors, who address the formulated doubt and give reasoned votes. A favorable theological result is then considered by the cardinals and bishops of the Dicastery according to law. Each stage evaluates rather than ceremonially ratifies the postulator’s presentation.

The Roman Pontiff alone authorizes the decree declaring heroic virtues after receiving the Dicastery’s judgment. Publication, binding, a favorable relator’s report, or a positive consultors’ vote does not itself make the candidate Venerable. Status language must await the papal act and promulgation rather than date advancement from the completion of a book.[3]

Distinct from martyrdom and miracle dossiers

A Positio Super Martyrio argues the fact and cause of martyrdom under its own criteria. An alleged miracle receives scientific and theological examination directed to the event and intercession. The same candidate can therefore have several positiones across a cause, but they are not editions of one interchangeable document and should not be cited without their object and year.

A reliable catalog entry identifies the cause, Roman phase, relator, collaborator where public, type of positio, date, volumes, consultative stages, and later decree. Because positiones often contain private testimony and copyrighted scholarly work, public availability is separate from canonical existence. Absence from a library catalog does not prove that no positio was prepared.
