Biblical vignettes for Hosea and Joel in the Bowyer Bible

Summary

Description
DIPTYCH 23: Bowyer Bible 2924 Head-piece to Hosea. Hosea cap 8 v 5. Loutherbourg + 2935 Head-piece to Joel. Joel cap 2 v 1. Philip James de Loutherbourg's designs for pairs of vignettes decorating books of Scripture as engraved head-pieces and tail-pieces in the Macklin Bible (ca.1790–1800). Loutherbourg's pen and wash drawings are now pasted into a grangerised Macklin Bible known as "The Bowyer Bible" in Bolton, England (item numbers given above). There are two drawings for each book which has both a headpiece and a tailpiece, or two drawings for two conjoined books which have a headpiece only; the latter are distinguished by a white border around both vignettes, as distinct from a single white line only between the two. The four-digit numbers for each diptych indicate the number assigned to that drawing (otherwise assigned to prints) in the Bowyer Bible. The lower of the two numbers in each pair is for the Headpiece design; the higher number is for the Tailpiece. archive.org/details/macklin-bible-old-testament-loutherbo...
