Aloísio Sebastião Boeing was a Brazilian Dehonian priest, novice master, parish minister, and founder of the Marian Fraternity of the Heart of Jesus.
Overview
Aloísio Sebastião Boeing (24 December 1913 – 17 April 2006), was a Catholic Dehonian priest from the Diocese of Joinville. On February 23, 2023, Pope Francis recognized his heroic virtue.[1]
Life
Origins and formation
Aloísio was the eldest of seven children in a Brazilian Catholic family of German ancestry. He entered the Dehonian minor seminary at Brusque in 1925, made temporary profession in 1934 and perpetual profession in 1938, and was ordained at Taubaté on 1 December 1940. That sequence establishes his S.C.J. profession and priesthood before his later work as founder. This chronology keeps civil identity, family formation, education, migration, and later ecclesial recognition in their proper order. A title conferred after death is not projected backward as though an eventual judgment were inevitable, and local people who shared the history retain their own agency.
Vocation and ministry
After parish and teaching assignments, Boeing served from 1952 to 1976 as novice master for the southern Brazilian Dehonian province. With Neide Girolla he developed the Marian Fraternity of the Heart of Jesus for women living consecrated community according to a Dehonian charism; the Bishop of Joinville erected it as a public association of the faithful in 1994. He then returned to parish and retreat-house service. The state of life stated here is exact: Holy Orders, religious profession, marriage, lay consecration, and lay discipleship are related but not interchangeable realities. Membership in an institute is asserted only where a competent source documents it, and an apostolate or friendship never creates an invented postnominal.
Christian witness and legacy
Spirituality
Union with the Heart of Jesus, Eucharistic reparation, prayer, obedience, spiritual direction, hope, and charity shaped his ministry. In an area with a substantial Lutheran community, he cultivated friendship and ecumenical cooperation without pretending that doctrinal differences had disappeared. Reparation means participation in Christ's self-giving love, not punishment imposed on vulnerable people or denial of human dignity. The accessible center of this witness is sacramental faith expressed through prayer, charity, prudence, justice, fortitude, and fidelity to a concrete vocation. Reported visions, favors, healings, or remembered sayings remain subject to historical and ecclesial discernment; none adds to revelation or replaces the Gospel, the sacraments, medical care, or responsible moral judgment.
Work and historical significance
Boeing formed generations of Dehonian novices, counseled priests and laypeople, assisted poor families, served parishes, and helped a women's community articulate its own form of consecration. Novices, Fraternity members, local Catholics, and Lutheran neighbors were collaborators rather than an audience for one priest. Continuing works remain answerable to present formation, safeguarding, financial, and ecumenical standards. Historical significance belongs not only to a named person but also to coworkers, families, patients, students, parishioners, local clergy, religious communities, and the people served. Institutions inspired by the life remain accountable to canon law, professional standards, safeguarding, and human dignity; later growth is evidence of influence, not automatic proof of sanctity.
Cause and veneration
Recognition and present status
The Diocese of Joinville conducted its inquiry from 2013 to 2015, and the Roman Dicastery validated it that year. After theological and cardinalatial review, Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing Boeing's heroic virtues on 23 February 2023. The decree confers the exact title Venerable. No beatification, miracle decree, or canonization had followed by 1 September 2026. The controlling evidence is the dated act of the pope, Dicastery, competent diocese, eparchy, patriarchal authority, or authorized postulation cited below. Canonical stages answer different questions and cannot be collapsed: opening or validating an inquiry, recognizing heroic virtue or martyrdom, beatification, and canonization each has its own juridical effect and evidentiary threshold.[2][3]
Liturgical and devotional scope
Venerable Aloísio Sebastião Boeing has no authorized public liturgical cult or feast and no memorial in the General Roman Calendar. Dehonians and the Marian Fraternity may preserve his archive, promote an approved private prayer, visit his grave, and report alleged favors, but may not anticipate beatification with a halo, proper Mass, Office, or relic cult. S.C.J. identifies profession, not rank. Anniversary Masses, pilgrimages, portraits, named institutions, private prayers, and reports of favors must be described according to that exact rank. They do not by themselves create a feast, authenticate a miracle, establish a relic cult, or authorize liturgical texts; the competent calendar and ecclesiastical authority govern every public observance.[4]
Biography
First years
Aloísio Sebastião Boeing was born on December 24, 1913 (Wednesday), in Vargem do Cedro (Santa Catarina), at that time a district of Imaruí, today belonging to São Martinho. Firstborn of a German Catholic family, he was baptized on December 26 of the same year and confirmed on January 22, 1914, in the Parish of São Sebastião, Vargem do Cedro. His parents João Boeing and Josephina Effting Boeing, attended mass and prayed the rosary daily. It was in this environment that Boeing developed his life and personality in childhood: in a home of practicing Catholic parents.
At the age of twelve, on February 11, 1925, encouraged by the parish priest, he left his homeland with three other colleagues, to the priesthood.
At the seminary
The stages of their formation took place basically in Brusque and Taubaté (state of São Paulo). The first religious profession took place in Brusque on 16 January 1934. Theology studies were done in Taubaté from 1938 to 1941.
He was ordained a priest on December 1, 1940 (Sunday).
Priesthood
As a priest, Boeing dedicated much of his life to formation, especially in Jaraguá do Sul.[5] In his convent, he was a novice master for 24 years. He became a trainer with a reputation as a firm, devout, and zealous. He had great devotion to the Virgin Mary. On his initiative, this novitiate was named after Our Lady of Fátima. Boeing was esteemed, distinguished by his kindness and paternal welcome from the students who sought him for spiritual guidance.
Boeing has always worked in the field of pastoral care. From the beginning of his priestly life, he was also sought by the people for spiritual counseling until the end of his life. That was the skill he developed throughout his life.[6]
Often, until dawn, he was sought after at home or by telephone for spiritual guidance, family counseling, and health blessing. He never stopped answering. At the end of his life, often sick, in bed, he attended, lying down, to the most urgent cases. He felt compassion for the people, especially the sick, the elderly and the poor. He had a special talent for conversation on spiritual things and would discuss and listen attentively tirelessly.
Death and legacy
Father Aloísio died on April 17, 2006. Feeling close to his departure and feeling leave to everyone he loved, said: "You will find me in the Eucharist." He was buried in the garden, next to the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, in the Nereu Ramos neighborhood, in Jaraguá do Sul. People testify to having already achieved thanks for his intercession. Every 17th of each month, remembering the day of his death, the Mass of Mercy is celebrated at 3:00 p.m. "We have lost a very dear priest, but we have won a saint in heaven!", remarked Osnildo Klann, a fellow Dehonian.
Beatification
Boeing's beatification process was opened in 2013 by the then diocesan bishop, Bishop Irineu Roque Scherer. The diocesan phase was closed in 2015.
Biographical documentary
On December 1, 2020, the date of the 80th anniversary of the priestly ordination of Boeing, those responsible for his process of recognition of holiness released a free documentary, lasting 0:53:40, The Daily Holiness. It was made available via YouTube.[7]
