Anthony Saliu Sanusi (Listenⓘ; 2 January 1911 – 8 December 2009) was a Nigerian Bishop of the Roman Catholic Church.
Anthony Sanusi was born in Iperu, Colonial Nigeria in 1911. He was ordained a priest on 17 December 1944 in Lagos, Nigeria. He was appointed bishop of the new created diocese of Ijebu-Ode on 29 May 1969, and received his episcopal consecration on 1 August 1969. He remained bishop of Ijebu-Ode diocese until his retirement in 1990.
Early life
Sanusi was born into a Muslim family on 2 January 1911; his father was a Muslim chief and Balogun of Iperu town. He was the youngest of his mother's six children.[1]
Episcopate
Sanusi's episcopal consecration took place in Kampala, Uganda, performed personally by Pope Paul VI on 1 August 1969.[2] In 1972, following the death of Archbishop J. K. Aggey, he was additionally appointed Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Lagos.[2] During his tenure, the number of parishes in the Diocese of Ijebu-Ode grew from five to eighteen.[1] He was instrumental in founding the Missionary Seminary of St. Paul at Iperu Remo, Ogun State, on 23 October 1977, becoming its first Ordinary and that of the Missionary Society of St. Paul (MSP).[2] He was also a co-founder of the Knights of St. Mulumba in Nigeria.[1]
Later life and death
Following his retirement, Sanusi remained active in pastoral affairs and was known as a skilled keyboardist into old age.[1] He died on 8 December 2009, about four weeks before his 99th birthday, at which time he was the oldest Nigerian Catholic bishop and the sixth-oldest bishop in the entire Catholic Church.[2]
