Bishop Emeritus
Appearance

A bishop emeritus is a former diocesan bishop whose resignation has been accepted and who retains the episcopal character and the emeritus title of the diocese he served.[1]
Nature of the office
Retirement ends diocesan governance, not episcopal ordination. An emeritus bishop remains a bishop, may exercise sacred ministry according to law, and should be treated with the honor and support owed to his service.
Canonical place
A diocesan bishop is requested to present his resignation at seventy-five or earlier when ill health or another grave cause makes office difficult. The Apostolic See judges acceptance and provides for suitable support and residence.
