Catholicism Wiki:Theological Status

From Catholicism Wiki

Theological status identifies what kind of claim a proposition is and what authority, certainty, or freedom properly belongs to it within Catholic theology.

A classification of claims

A proposition can repeat dogma, state definitive doctrine, summarize authentic but non-definitive teaching, draw a theological conclusion, report a permitted school, or advance a speculative opinion. Correct status prevents both minimizing the faith and exaggerating a favored explanation into dogma.[1]

Catholicism Wiki uses 'Theological status' as a heading for theological synthesis. It does not mean that the adjoining material is doubtful; it means that its weight follows its sources, reasoning, reception, and relation to the Magisterium rather than constituting a distinct teaching act by itself.

Notes and responsible judgment

Traditional theological notes range from truths of divine faith through doctrines proximate to faith, common and certain teaching, probable opinions, and positions judged unsafe or erroneous. Terminology has varied among manuals, so a note should never be assigned mechanically or without sources.[2]

Theological freedom operates inside the obedience of faith. It cannot reopen what the Church has definitively settled, but it permits disciplined investigation where revelation and the Magisterium leave a genuine question open.
