A diocesan synod is a solemn assembly of selected priests and other faithful who assist the diocesan bishop for the good of the entire diocesan community.

Nature of the office

A diocesan synod is not a local parliament and cannot set aside universal Church law. It is a structured act of consultation in which pastoral conditions are examined and the bishop may issue statutes and decrees within his competence.[1]

Canonical place

Only the diocesan bishop convokes and presides over the synod, and he alone signs its declarations and decrees as legislator. Membership is regulated by canon law and includes specified officeholders together with elected or appointed participants.
