Lay Dominicans

Lay Dominicans are lay Catholics incorporated into the Lay Fraternities of Saint Dominic, sharing the Order of Preachers' mission of prayer, study, community, and preaching while remaining in the lay state.

The lay branch of the Dominican Family

The Dominican laity developed from medieval penitential fraternities associated with the preaching and spiritual life of the Order of Preachers. Saint Catherine of Siena is its pre-eminent medieval member. The older name Third Order of Saint Dominic and the historical initials T.O.S.D. remain common in biographical and bibliographical usage, while current legislation ordinarily speaks of the Lay Fraternities of Saint Dominic.

A Lay Dominican makes promises according to the approved Rule and the directory of the competent fraternity. Those promises establish a genuine vocation and stable bond within the Dominican Family, but they are not public religious vows and do not place the member in consecrated life or the clerical state. Married and unmarried lay faithful may belong without abandoning the duties proper to their state of life.

Formation and government

Local fraternities provide formation in Scripture, Catholic doctrine, Dominican history and spirituality, liturgical and personal prayer, apostolic discernment, and common life. Councils and lay presidents govern fraternities under the Rule, while Dominican religious assistants support communion with the wider Order without replacing the laity's own responsibility.

The Dominican Family also includes friars, contemplative nuns, apostolic sisters, priestly fraternities, and other recognized groups. Shared Dominican identity does not erase their distinct canonical forms: a Lay Dominican should not be described as a Dominican friar, nun, or religious merely by reason of fraternity membership.
